Finite automorphisms of negatively curved Poincaré Duality groups

In this paper, we show that if G is a finite p-group (p prime) acting by automorphisms on a δ-hyperbolic Poincaré Duality group over Z, then the fixed subgroup is a Poincaré Duality group over Zp. We also provide a family of examples to show that the fixed subgroup might not be a Poincaré Duality group over Z. In fact, the fixed subgroups in our examples even fail to be duality groups over Z.

Negatively Curved Groups

The notion of a negatively curved group is at first highly non-intuitive because it links two areas of mathematics that are not usually associated with one another. Curvature is generally a property that we associate with geometric objects like curves or surfaces in R, while a group is an algebraic structure that we associate with objects like integers or matrices. However, there is a way to de...

Algorithmic Problems in Amalgams of Finite Groups

Geometric methods proposed by Stallings [53] for treating finitely generated subgroups of free groups were successfully used to solve a wide collection of decision problems for free groups and their subgroups [4, 25, 37, 38, 43, 48, 56]. It turns out that Stallings’ methods can be effectively generalized for the class of amalgams of finite groups [39]. In the present paper we employ subgroup gr...

Separable Subsets of Gferf Negatively Curved Groups

A word hyperbolic group G is called GFERF if every quasiconvex subgroup coincides with the intersection of finite index subgroups containing it. We show that in any such group, the product of finitely many quasiconvex subgroups is closed in the profinite topology on G.

Negatively Curved Groups and the Convergence Property Ii: Transitivity in Negatively Curved Groups

Let G be a negatively curved group. This paper continues the classiication of limit points of G that began in part I. A probability measure is constructed on the space at innnity and with respect to this measure almost every point at innnity is shown to be line transitive.
